Critically acclaimed director Frances Coppola announced he’ll begin production on a sequel to the 1979 classic Apocalypse Now. The film will be a modernized version of the little known Joseph Conrad sequel to Heart of Darkness, Heart of Sequined Sparkles, a haunting tale of two gay cabaret dancers in London at the turn of the century. The script, co-written by Coppola and Harvey Firestein, takes place in New York during the nineties. “It’s a tragic tale, a metaphor for life, really” said Firestein. The main plot reportedly revolves around a Broadway choreographer who goes insane, losing his perspective, and his rhythm. “He goes totally wacky,” reveals Firestein, “destroying all those around him. He tacks up in his dressing room all the leg warmers of the dancers he’s fired. It’s chilling.” The film is tentatively title Apocalypse Nower, though the original screenplay is rumored to have been titled Apocalypse Now and Then. Casting is incomplete but Nathan Lane has signed on to play the insane choreographer Valeri Poofski. Coppola is reportedly seeking the enigmatic genius Marlon Brando to play the uncloseted Marlow, who discovers his sexual taste for sailor’s remains with him long after he’s reached port. The budget for the film has not been disclosed but is expected to exceed $100 million. “There won’t be many explosions,” explained Coppola, “but we’re going to have a lot of costumes. Bright, sparkly costumes; tights, boots, head bands. Oh, it’s going to be fantastic!”
